Who Do You Turn鈥痶o for鈥疕elp? It Depends鈥
In the legal education community, we often talk鈥痑necdotally about who people鈥痶urn to鈥痜or advice on the鈥痡ourney鈥痶o law school. But鈥痠n reality, who they turn to isn鈥檛 as simple as 鈥渢heir prelaw advisors鈥 or 鈥渢heir parents.鈥 It depends.
Specifically, it depends on where people are on the journey. Are they at the beginning, scoping the process and taking the LSAT? Are they actively involved in the process, hitting鈥淪ubmit鈥 and applying to law school? Or are they sitting at the kitchen table with rejection and acceptance letters, trying to figure out where to enroll?
Overall,鈥痶est takers,鈥痑pplicants, and first-year鈥痩aw students鈥痶urn to family, friends, and attorneys for advice. However, across 精东影业鈥檚 Applied Research reports, a story鈥痚merges鈥痑s people go from test takers, to鈥痑pplicants, to law students 鈥 and as future possibilities鈥痓ecome reality.
For example,鈥32% of鈥test taker respondents鈥痳eported they turned to family for鈥痑dvice or information about the application process. That number grows to 48% of鈥痑pplicant respondents鈥痺ho reported they turned to family for advice or information about where to apply, and鈥49% of鈥first-year law student respondents鈥who said they turned to family for advice or information about where to enroll. In other words, as the idea of law school forms and becomes a tangible reality,鈥痶he ultimate decision of where to enroll weighs heavily as it directly鈥痑ffects鈥痵tudents鈥 family lives.鈥赌

Further, while people do turn to prelaw advisors, pathway programs, and college advisors along the journey, applicants and first-year law students both reveal that the legal community 鈥 specifically, current law students and alumni of鈥痵chools they鈥檙e interested in 鈥斺痓ecomes鈥痑 valuable source of advice and information about applying to and enrolling in law school. For example,鈥28% of鈥痑pplicant respondents鈥痑nd 28% of鈥first-year law student鈥痳espondents鈥痳eported they turned to current law students鈥痜or advice and information to decide where to apply and where to enroll, respectively. And alumni of鈥schools鈥痯eople were interested in also鈥played鈥痑 role in their network. Specifically,鈥24% of鈥痑pplicant respondents鈥痑nd 18% of鈥first-year law student respondents鈥痳eported they鈥痶urned to law schools鈥 alumni for advice and information to decide where to apply and where to enroll, respectively.
In the context of the lived journey, this makes sense: As the journey progresses, people turn to new sources,鈥痚specially鈥痠n鈥痶he鈥痩aw school space, as they decide what to do next 鈥 while keeping themselves anchored鈥痠n their personal networks, including their family and鈥痜riends.鈥
